Latest Adventures in Drupal
So, its been a loooooong while since my last Drupal post, but its been a very busy couple of months for me and my adventures in Drupal. Since leaving TransMagic in September 2009, my Drupal knowledge base has grown exponentially. First I went to pingVision in Boulder, CO as a Drupal Developer on a couple of client projects. During that time I was introduced to the wonderful world of Drush, Views, Content Types, and Taxonomy. How I ever managed to "play" in Drupal without this knowledge is beyond me. If I work on a site that does not have the ability to use Drush, ie: my home account through 1and1.com, I get a little angry. Not letting me have control from the command line, is ... well, doesn't make for a happy Karyn. After spending a couple of months with pingVision, I chose to change jobs again, and take a four month contract position with Canon Communications in Denver. There I am getting the opportunity to work with some amazing guys. We've got a really excellent team. I feel blessed to be learning from, working with, and collaborating with such talented and intelligent people. As an extra bonus, I even get my own office, which I find hilarious, but nice just the same because I get to play my own music. This year, I've also really discovered the power of Skype, both in the workplace and at home. At ping, and now at Canon, we use Skype to talk between the members of the project we are working on. Our project leads are in Chicago and Philadelphia, so having an easy way to stay in-touch during the day is nice, and important. Most of the chats are business related and idea swapping, but sometimes we like to get on our soap boxes, or just discuss what's up in the world. (The geek version of "water cooler" chats.) My hubby and I are also using Skype for our home phone. We don't use it often, but Mel is working out of the house now, and sometimes needs a land line. Skype offers cheap and free phone rates, plus with the Zoom Skype phone adaptor we can use any phone in the house to utilize this cheap alternative. This includes, but is not limited to family overseas, which is cool. We got rid of Qwest for phone service, and Dish for TV this year. We don't really miss them much. Its actually quite liberating actually. Also, the relief of not having to pay for those services sure out weighs the benefits of having them. Now if only we could find ways to decrease our monthly mobile phone bill, we'd be stoked. But we love our iPhones, so I don't see that happening anytime soon. I'll post some of my most recent lessons learned in Drupal, ie: how to get Drush working on a shared 1and1 server, here shortly, but think this is a good place to stop for tonight. Happy & Healthy New Year everyone.
